Kevin Boyne, COO of UUNet mentioned at a recent talk at an MPLS conference at Virginia, USA that today's opportunity is moving from Hypergrowth to Hyperscale, as the target traffic flow will go from 1 Terabit/s in 2000 to 10 Petabit/s (1 Petabit =1000 Terabit) in 2005, considering 10-fold growth every year.
Clearly, continuous innovations are needed to try and solve the traffic flow problems, while maintaining required traffic characteristics.
After separate efforts by many companies to solve this problem, IETF as a body has proposed MPLS as a possible solution. There is extremely heated activity in this area currently, with Network Equipment Manufacturers (NEMs, such as Cisco, Juniper etc.) rushing to implement MPLS on their devices, and Infrastructure Service Providers (ISPs such as AT&T, Sprint etc.) trying to utilize this new technology to their advantage.
