WAN Access to RouterTester using MS Terminal Services
When accessing lab equipment across a WAN (e.g. from
home), broadband networks such as cable modem, DSL,
and ADSL can introduce high communication latencies.
These latencies are an accumulation of the following:
transmission delays as a result of traversing physical
distances
equipment forwarding (e.g. routers, gateways, satellites)
VPN security components (e.g. encryption/decryption)
Typical WAN latencies can be on the order of 125-150ms.
In comparison, LAN networks present latencies of <5ms.
These latencies can produce performance issues if they
are compounded by communication protocols that require
multiple acknowledgments.
Agilent recommends using Microsoft's Terminal Services
(TS) for remote WAN access to RouterTester. This Technical
Note describes the benefits of TS, compares it against
other remote access methods, and shows how to set up
TS servers and clients.
The Terminal Services client software needs to be installed
on the client PC. The installation executable 'msrdpcli.exe'
is available on the current RouterTester software release
CD, and can also be downloaded from the Microsoft website.
