Today’s communications networks for voice and data are converging onto a single infrastructure designed to both reduce costs and enable new services like video, gaming and conferencing. These networks are based on a new generation of multifunction networking elements that are significantly more complicated to test. Carrier routers in the MPLS/IP core are being upgraded to achieve high reliability and availability at even higher bandwidths including 40Gb/s. Multi-service platforms (MSPs) are implementing latest Next Generation Sonet/SDH protocols to deliver a more robust and efficient means for triple-play service traffic throughput. A new generation of broadband access network elements like IP-DSLAMs and B-RASs must now differentiate from best-effort and real-time traffic, incorporate multicast technology mechanisms whilst also delivering greater bandwidth past the last mile. High end enterprise devices must also accomodate greater performance scalability and network security.
