Test Applications for Next Generation SONET/SDH
SONET/SDH is evolving. The best features of the widely deployed SONET/SDH standards are being combined with new approaches to efficiently transport broadband data. Component suppliers and network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) are building a migration path for service providers to offer new services along with lower network operating costs.
A new breed of next generation SONET/SDH devices referred to as MSPs (Multi-Service Platforms) utilizing Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCat), Ethernet payloads, and Link
Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) is being developed. Design and test engineers need to be able to verify standards conformance and quality of service (QoS), as well as being able to resolve multivendor
interoperability problems.
Combining new methods and standards with a complex legacy technology poses a difficult challenge for engineers designing and testing NGS.
This document outlines key test cases to meet the challenges of testing MSPs using the OmniBER. The OmniBER is used extensively by leading chipset suppliers, NEMs and service providers to perform advanced analysis capabilities and to provide faster and more complete problem isolation.
